Passion diptych

Two intricately carved gothic ivory panels depicting the Passion of the Christ.

Passion diptych, c.1350 – 1375, Ivory, Paris, @The Samuel Courtauld Trust, The Courtauld Gallery, London.

This diptych belongs to a group of closely comparable works in which the Passion of Christ is recounted, often in vivid detail, to encourage the viewer to imagine they were present at the events. The order in which they are to be read, whether from left to right, top to bottom, or vice versa, can vary. In this piece, the narrative begins at the bottom left with the Annunciation and follows from left to right until the Pentecost (the coming of the Holy Spirit represented as a dove) at the top.
