Event Description:
This study event accompanies the Courtauld Gallery’s Griffin Catalyst Exhibition Seurat and the Sea (13 Feb- 17 May 2026). Exhibition curator and Senior Curator of Paintings at the Courtauld Gallery Karen Serres and Head of Short Courses Anne Puetz will explore several themes relating to Georges Seurat’s five painting campaigns on the northern coast of France between 1885 and 1890. We will discuss the artist’s affinity with this part of the Atlantic seaboard and his fascination with its atmospheric conditions and the artistic challenge it posed. We will delve into Seurat’s evolving neo-Impressionist technique, his interest in the industrialisation of the ports and the transformation of fishing villages into popular tourist destinations and discuss his artistic legacy.
Booking required; the event fee for on-campus attendance includes admission on the day to the Griffin Catalyst exhibition Seurat and the Sea
Booking for online access remains open until the end of the exhibition (17 May 2026). The lecture recordings will be sent on Tuesday 28 March, or within five days for those booking after the 28th, and will be accessible for 8 days from delivery.
Please note that in 2025 new VAT rules for online courses came into effect in the EU. This meant that we are now required to charge EU participants their local VAT rate. VAT-inclusive prices for EU students will be displayed at check-out.
