This study event accompanies the Courtauld Gallery’s Griffin Catalyst Exhibition Seurat and the Sea (13 Feb- 17 May 2026). Exhibition curator and Senior Curator of Paintings at the Courtauld Gallery Karen Serres and Head of Short Courses Anne Puetz will explore several themes relating to Georges Seurat’s five painting campaigns on the northern coast of France between 1885 and 1890. We will discuss the artist’s affinity with this part of the Atlantic seaboard and his fascination with its atmospheric conditions and the artistic challenge it posed. We will delve into Seurat’s evolving neo-Impressionist technique, his interest in the industrialisation of the ports and the transformation of fishing villages into popular tourist destinations and discuss his artistic legacy.
