The Desert in the Lagoon

Speaker: David Young Kim, Associate Professor, University of Pennsylvania and Visiting Lecturer, University of Zurich.

This seminar will examine formats that develop art historical arguments outside the conventional methods of printed publications and conference talk. David Young Kim will screen his new film “The Desert in the Lagoon” (co-directed with Amelia Saul) which offers a close reading of Giovanni Bellini’s Saint Francis in the Desert. This experimental film essay uncovers the painting’s background and setting, putting them in relation with the abandoned and deserted islands in the Venetian Lagoon. Shooting locations include New York, Florence, Pitigliano, and Venice.

David Young Kim is an Associate Professor at the University of Pennsylvania and a Visiting Lecturer at the University of Zurich. His publications include The Traveling Artist in the Italian Renaissance (Yale UP, 2014) and Groundwork: A History of the Renaissance Picture (Princeton UP, 2022).
