This session of Addressing Images will be based on a photograph taken of Indonesian fashion designer Toton Januar’s Spring/Summer 2019 runway show during Jakarta Fashion Week. We will discuss how contemporary Southeast Asian womenswear designers put together traditional/modern and local/global elements not only in designing clothing but also to create compelling fashion narratives, and how this hybridity creates unique brand identities that appeal to domestic and international consumers alike.
Nadya Wang received her BA from the National University of Singapore (2004-2008) and then completed her MA at The Courtauld with Dr. Rebecca Arnold (2012-2013). Her research interests include Dress and Identity, Dress and the Body, Southeast Asian Fashion Histories, Women’s Magazines and the intersections of Fashion, Business and Art. Nadya has written extensively on the Fashion Industry in Asia, including two online articles for Bloomsbury Fashion Central. She is particularly interested in the relationship between globalisation, feminine identity and modernisation. Currently, Nadya is a PhD candidate supervised by Dr Arnold and is researching how Her World magazine used dress and fashion to construct templates of ideal Singaporean femininity in the 1970s and 1980s.
