Join us for a discussion with two world-leading experts on Monet, Jackie Wullschläger, Chief Art Critic of the Financial Times, and Monet and London exhibition curator Dr Karen Serres, Senior Curator of Paintings at The Courtauld, as they talk about the life and work of Claude Monet (1840–1926) – renowned as one of the leading figures of French Impressionism, the movement that changed the course of modern art.
Jackie Wullschläger is the FT’s Chief Art Critic, covering exhibitions of historic and contemporary art in the UK and Europe. She has worked on the FT arts and books pages since 1986. Her books include the biographies Monet: The Restless Vision, which won the Elizabeth Longford Prize for Historical Biography 2024 and the Franco-British Society Literary Award 2023; Chagall: Love and Exile, which won the Spears Book Award 2009 and was shortlisted for the Costa Biography Award and the Duff Cooper Prize 2008; and Hans Christian Andersen: The Life of a Storyteller, which won the international Andersen Prize in 2002. She lives in London.
Dr Karen Serres is Senior Curator of Paintings at The Courtauld. Karen studied art history at the École du Louvre and the Université of the Sorbonne in Paris and holds an MA and PhD from the Courtauld Institute of Art. After completing an Andrew W. Mellon Curatorial Fellowship at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, she was named Robert H. Smith Research Curator in the Department of Sculpture before taking up the position of Nina and Lee Griggs Associate Curator of European Art at the prestigious Yale University Art Gallery. Karen has curated recent exhibitions including The Courtauld Collection. A Vision for Impressionism (2019–20), Van Gogh. Self-Portraits (2022) and Monet and London. Views of the Thames (2024).
