Fashion Illustration Masterclass with YÉGA

Gray M.C.A in partnership with The Courtauld Institute of Art London is proud to present a series of Fashion Illustration Masterclasses – each hosted by a leading illustrator. In each session you will hear how a contemporary artist approaches his or her work, and what inspires and influences their practice.  Participants will also gain insight and feedback on the work they produce over the course of the evening, as they are invited to draw fashion worn by live models. This is a unique opportunity to be inspired to learn about current fashion illustration practice, while producing your own drawing.

We are pleased to announce that our next Masterclass will be hosted by YÉGA.

The class will explore:

  • The historical origins of Fashion Illustration in Africa
  • The Nigerian style culture of Aso Ebí (a cultural norm of wearing a uniform fabric in varying designs during family celebrations)
  • Simplifying the Fashion Sketch

Participants will attempt a merging of these three themes to create one-of-a-kind works of art inspired by Aso Ebí!

YÉGA is a British-Nigerian fashion artist whose client list mirrors the diverse international following her work has garnered. This includes British Vogue, Vogue Arabia, Maison Laduree, Boghossian, Diane Von Furstenberg, Grazia, Fashion Trust Arabia, Jennifer Chamandi and The Dubai Mall.

Her blended cultural experience greatly influences her eclectic style, often featuring intricate line work, patterns, bold colour palettes and her favourite subject- the human figure. Working predominantly with fine liner pens and digital colour, she also experiments with watercolours, markers and acrylic paint.

In 2020, YÉGA founded Fashion Illustration Africa to encourage knowledge sharing between Western and African illustrators. She also co-founded iLLUSTRA8, an NYC-based talent management agency representing multidisciplinary illustrators from Africa, India and the Middle East.

Organised by Dr Rebecca Arnold (The Courtauld) and Kathryn Reed (The Courtauld).
