Join us in-person at The Courtauld Gallery to explore ‘Drawn to Blue: Artists’ use of blue paper’, a new exhibition which explores artists’ use of blue paper, including works by artists Jacopo Tintoretto and Joseph Mallord William Turner.
Made from fibres derived from blue rags, blue paper first appeared in Northern Italy in the 14th century. It became a popular with artists as it provided a mid-tone which allowed the creation of strong light and dark contrasts. Join us for a curator-led tour of the exhibition to find out how blue paper has changed artists’ techniques and practices over the past 700 years.
Attendees will also go behind the scenes to view a selection of drawings up close in our Prints and Drawings Study Room. Kate, our brilliant Paper Conservator will share some of the exciting discoveries that have been brought to light using technical analysis, and discuss how she cares for our collection of around 26000 prints and 7000 drawings. This will be followed by a practical workshop exploring paper making, and a chance to put some of the drawing techniques you have seen in the gallery into practice in our Learning studio.
