Artists Appau Jnr Boakye-Yiadom and Hardeep Pandhal will come together to discuss their work in relation to the exhibition GENERATIONS: Connecting Across Time and Place. The talk will explore the ways in which both artists’ work challenges wider social and cultural preconceptions. In his video installation, Plantain Drop, Boakye-Yiadom explores the hybridity of everyday cultural references. Pandhal’s work, Baba Deep Thing by Mum, reimagines the story of a Sikh martyr in the form of a textile knitted by the artist’s mother. The discussion will focus on the ways in which the two artists – both born in the mid-80s – have been influenced by other generations, creating work that speaks to contemporary experiences.
The talk will be moderated by MA Curating the Art Museum student, Debbie Meniru.
This event is part of a programme of talks for GENERATIONS: Connecting Across Time and Place, curated by the students of the MA Curating the Art Museum programme at The Courtauld Institute of Art.

Appau Jnr Boakye-Yiadom
Appau Jnr Boakye-Yiadom was born in 1984 and lives and works in London. He graduated from the Royal Academy Schools in 2008. A multi-disciplinary artist, he works with moving image, photography, recorded sound and archival material to create compelling installation pieces. He is interested in examining and re-appropriating collective moments and cultural memories. Recent projects include: The Weather Garden: Anne Hardy curates the Arts Council Collection, Towner Art Gallery, UK (2019); Solo Presentations 2019, Jerwood Visual Arts, London (2019); Naming Rights, Thomas Dane Gallery, London (2017); Untitled, New Art Exchange, Nottingham (2017); Critical Contemplation with 198 Contemporary Arts and Learning, Tate Exchange, Tate Modern, (2017). Boakye-Yiadom is also a recipient of a Jerwood Visual Arts Artist Bursary, 2017.
Hardeep Pandhal
Hardeep Pandhal was born in Birmingham in 1985 and lives and works in Glasgow. He obtained his MFA in Fine Art from The Glasgow School of Art in 2013. Pandhal’s practice encompasses digital animation, rap, wall drawings and textiles. His work primarily reflects upon experiences of racism, drawing on and referencing his own background as a second generation British Sikh. Recent solo exhibitions include: Paranoid Picnic: The Phantom BAME, New Art Exchange and Primary, Nottingham (2018); Self-Loathing Flashmob, Kelvin Hall, Glasgow International 2018, Glasgow; Liar Hydrant, Cubitt, London (2018). Recent group exhibitions include: Is This Tomorrow?, Whitechapel Gallery, London (2019); 2018 Triennial: Songs for Sabotage, New Museum, New York (2018). In 2018 he was shortlisted for the Film London Jarman Award and the Arts Council Collection acquired three of his works.
