Addressing Images: Fashion, Taste and the Jeweller’s Sentiment

Speaker: Claudine Seroussi - The Courtauld

Black and white photograph of a group of women with elaborate hairstyles decorated with feathers and jewellery i Jewels by Georges Fouquet, published in Femina, February 1912

This Addressing Images will be based on a 1912 editorial image featuring jewels by French jeweller Georges Fouquet. We will consider jewellery’s relationship with fashion, taste and time and explore what they reveal about the jeweller and their relationship with the jewels through examining this editorial and a range of further editorial, publicity and archival images.

Claudine Seroussi received her BA from UCL in History of Art and Medieval Archaeology at UCL (1994-1997), an MSc from SOAS (2000-2001) and an MA from the Sotheby’s Institute/University of Manchester (2010-2011). She has worked as a researcher specialising in French and American jewellery from the inter-war period for the past decade.  Currently, she is a PhD candidate under the supervision of Dr Rebecca Arnold and is researching how French jewellers defined and legitimised jewellery between 1920-29 through written word, imagery, collaboration, and exhibitions.

Organised by Dr Rebecca Arnold (The Courtauld) and Kathryn Reed (The Courtauld).
