When creating this piece I wanted to integrate Van Gogh’s style, his inspiration, and my own personal identity.
I feel that Van Gogh’s style is part of what makes his work so recognisable. So, when looking at his work, I wanted to interpret the blank canvas and to question what it would look like finished.
You can see some small marks already, which look like branches, which sparked my interest. I also wanted to include the Japanese print style into the piece as that was Van Gogh’s original inspiration, as seen in the background.
Van Gogh’s portrait is centred around identity, so I make the subject of the work a boat, to link to my own passion for sailing and the water.
