This sculpture draws direct inspiration from Vincent van Gogh’s Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear, exploring themes of mental health and self-perception.
The distorted, inhuman form – particularly on the right side – symbolizes psychological fragmentation. Elements of Japanese folklore, especially the exaggerated eyes of the oni (demon), further enhance the emotional intensity and otherworldliness of the piece.
The left side retains a more human appearance, emphasizing contrast and duality.
