You often see famous artists’ work printed on tote bags and merchandise, long after the artist is gone. Many of these artists, like Van Gogh, probably never imagined their work would be commodified in this way.
This raises the question of how people consume art every day in ways they might not realise. I recycled a tote bag given to me at a Courtauld workshop and decided to paint Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear on one of them as my response
