A Stitched Line

Kingsdale Foundation School, Year 9

Fabric dyes, recycled materials and embroidery thread on cotton.

Our textile pieces respond to Vincent van Gogh’s Self Portrait with Bandaged Ear and Rachel Jones’s large-scale canvas lick your teeth, they so clutch (2021). The embroidered threads along the background mimic Van Gogh’s expressive brushstrokes, adding movement, depth and emotional tension to the flat surface. The use of vibrant colour and tactile texture nods to Jones’s
technique of layering and distorting form to explore the complexities of inner experience. We used hand and machine embroidery to work into our artworks and added quotes from Van Gogh’s letters to his brother Theo.
