The Courtauld is able to support a limited number of applications to externally funded research fellowships each year.
We have annual deadlines for our internal selection process for several schemes as detailed below.
Expressions of interest for applications to other schemes will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
The Courtauld is ineligible to support applications for Leverhulme Trust Early Career Fellowships.
We are currently unable to host visiting research fellows or secondments where there is no contract of employment with the Courtauld.
Application Process
We run an internal selection process aimed at ensuring that the strongest possible applications are put forward for these competitive schemes. We take into consideration the strength of the research proposal, the individual’s track record, and alignment with the Courtauld’s research environment to ensure that we can provide suitable support for candidates’ research.
Candidates wishing to apply for an externally funded fellowship award via the Courtauld are asked to provide the following information in an application form, which can be downloaded below:
- CV to date and publication record
- Research proposal (1,000-word limit)
- Project workplan (500-word limit)
- Details of proposed outputs and plans for publication/dissemination (500-word limit)
Each candidate’s application must also be supported by a current member of our Faculty, who will act as a mentor if the application receives funding.
Faculty members are required to submit a separate statement of up to 300 words in support of the proposal via a form which can be downloaded below; it is the responsibility of the candidate to arrange for this to take place ahead of the relevant deadline.
A full list of Courtauld faculty members is available at https://courtauld.ac.uk/research/faculty/.

Priority areas of research
For all schemes, we ask applicants to refer to the priorities in our Research Strategy (2024–29), and we particularly welcome topics that relate to our current Research Clusters.
For British Academy International Fellowships, we especially welcome applications from scholars working on and/or on geographical areas that are currently underrepresented in the Courtauld’s research community.
Deadlines
For British Academy International Fellowships and Royal Society Fellowships our annual deadline is 7 January. For this scheme, each Faculty member may only sponsor one application in accordance with the British Academy’s regulations. Therefore, candidates are encouraged to contact prospective sponsors as early as possible.

For British Academy Postdoctoral awards our annual deadline is 1 June.
All deadlines are 12:00 UK time on the stated date.

Candidates interested in other schemes should contact the Research Office at researchoffice@courtauld.ac.uk A full proposal as detailed above must be submitted at least four months ahead of the funder’s application deadline; a longer lead in may apply depending on the complexity of the scheme.
All applications for support will be reviewed by members of the Courtauld’s Research Committee.
Applicants will be informed of the outcome of their Expression of Interest within a month of submission.
Selected candidates will work with the Research Office to develop their proposal for submission to the relevant scheme.
