The Courtauld is delighted to announce that Dr Caroline Levitt will be the next Head of the History of Art Department, taking up the three-year position on 1 September 2021. Dr Levitt is a specialist in 19th and 20th century French art, architecture and literature, and for the last five years has been the Programme Coordinator for the Graduate Diploma in the History of Art.
Dr Levitt completed her BA in French and History of Art at UCL in 2004 and came to The Courtauld for an MA (2005) and PhD (2008). She has particular research interests in artists working across media and in relationships between text and image/object; her most recent article examines textuality in the tapestries of Le Corbusier and Jean Lurçat. Dr Levitt currently teaches on the BA History of Art, Graduate Diploma in the History of Art, and MA Special Option Wordplay: Intersections between the verbal and the visual, c.1870 to the present . She coordinates the Word and Image Research Cluster, and is a regular contributor to The Courtauld’s Public Programmes.
Dr Levitt says: ‘This is an exciting time for Art History and for The Courtauld. We never stop learning, and images, words and ideas are such a vital part of education and communication at every stage and in all contexts. It is a real privilege to be taking on this leading role, working with a world-class team of colleagues across departments with a combined enthusiasm for researching, teaching and sharing art with as many people as possible.’
