The Courtauld collaborates on a new digital programme with Somerset House

18 Jun 2020

The Courtauld Institute of Art is pleased to announce the launch of a new collaborative digital programme with Somerset House supported by Morgan Stanley.

The Courtauld is an important part of Somerset House’s creative community and our digital collaboration includes a month of free online events, films and live conversations with artists, and the launch of Unquiet Moments: Capturing the Everyday, the first fully digital exhibition presented by The Courtauld’s MA Curating the Art Museum students.

Unquiet Moments launches online today (18 June) at 3pm and is an exhibition dedicated to the recording of everyday life by bringing together artworks that capture the small wonders and disappointments that shape our lives.

The exhibition was initially conceived in response to a chapter of Somerset House’s history as the site of the public Register of Births, Marriages and Deaths in the UK for over 130 years. It was intended to be a public exhibition in Somerset House’s galleries whilst The Courtauld Gallery is closed for refurbishment, however it has moved online in light of continued gallery closures across the UK due to COVID-19.

Unquiet Moments brings together 35 major works from The Courtauld Collection and the Arts Council Collection, spanning four hundred years of artistic practice, from the seventeenth century to the present day by artists including Rembrandt, Zarina Bhimji, Paul Cézanne, Berthe Morisot, Sunil Gupta, Barbara Walker, Michael Craig Martin, Linda Karshan and Mikhail Karikis.

At a time where our everyday interactions have taken on new meaning, the exhibition draws attention to the diversity of everyday life as experienced individually, collectively and across time and place. As the Curators explain: ‘In a time of global loss, our exhibition honours the enduring impulse to record, to save and to remember: to ensure the survival of the things most precious to us.’

Launch event

On 18 June at 6pm, Somerset House and The Courtauld will host a special, live launch party on YouTube to celebrate the opening of Unquiet Moments. The event includes a curators’ tour of the exhibition, led by the nine students of the MA Curating programme who will also offer insight into their creative process.
