It was with great sadness that we learned of the death of leading feminist and art historian Professor Linda Nochlin last month aged 86.
Professor Nochlin specialised in the art of the 19th and 20th centuries, particularly in the work of Gustave Courbet and the Impressionists, and the representation of women and the work of women artists. Her book Woman as Sex Object: Studies in Erotic Art, 1730-1970, published in 1972, introduced a feminist perspective to the field of art history and criticism.
The Courtauld was honoured to have Professor Nochlin as an honorary degree recipient in 2012 and we shall miss her greatly.
UCL’s Professor Tamar Garb wrote about the life and works of Professor Nochlin in The Guardian.
