Courtauld alumnus recognised in New Year Honours

Congratulations to Courtauld alumnus Professor Maurice Howard who has been made an OBE for services to higher education and architectural heritage in the New Year Honours list.

Professor Howard was awarded his MA from The Courtauld in 1972 and his PhD in 1985 under the supervision of John Newman. He is currently professor of art history at the University of Sussex where he joined after lectureships at Pennsylvania State University and the University of St Andrews.  He is principally an architectural historian of Early Modern Europe and his research has encompassed the arts of painting and the applied arts. His work has focused mainly on architecture in England in the 16th and 17th centuries.

Professor Howard was Director (2007-10) and then President (2010-14) of the Society of Antiquaries of London.
