Enhancing the student experience

Many of The Courtauld’s most popular traditions, clubs and societies were developed during Deborah’s leadership over the past two decades, including the introduction of student-run publication The Courtauldian (est. 2012) and the MA Curating the Art Museum exhibition. There were also improvements to our student accommodation provision, the student careers service, and many other initiatives to enhance the student experience (to be further expanded through our new partnership with King’s College London).

In addition to the many innovations, interventions and improvements during Deborah’s tenure, perhaps what is most remarkable is the personal impact that Deborah has made on those who meet her. One of her standout qualities is her deep commitment to Courtauld students, during and after their studies. She has contributed so much to the alumni network over the years and is much-loved by this community. Known for her warmth and approachability, Deborah devotes much of her free time to keeping in touch with Courtauld graduates and is always one of the first to congratulate them on their achievements and career successes.

With a network of over 9,000 graduates across 70 countries, The Courtauld’s alumni are a global powerhouse and cultural force leading major galleries, auction houses, and international art fairs as well as holding prominent positions as art historians, curators and conservationists. Courtauld graduates have received many academic, literary, and art prizes including the Turner Prize, Academy Awards, Golden Globes, BAFTAs, and Grammy Awards.

‘Debby was always one of my most eager and reliable advocates. Most memorably, knowing my future aspirations for a career in Communications, Debby (gently) cornered a visiting Comms Director at a major US art institution to ensure I didn’t miss an opportunity to make a key connection. Amidst the demanding Courtauld environment, Debby’s ability to pay close attention to the details of our lives is something so remarkable and something to be cherished.’
