In Memoriam: Gabrielle Jungels-Winkler

Author: Professor Deborah Swallow, Märit Rausing Director

It is with great sadness that we announce that Gabrielle Jungels-Winkler, a longstanding benefactor to The Courtauld and steadfast champion for the arts, passed away peacefully in her home on 31 October 2018.

Born in Hong Kong, Gabrielle graduated with a BA in History of Art from Scripps College, Claremont University, California, in 1972, having spent her junior year at the L’École du Louvre in Paris.  She continued to pursue her passion for art history as a graduate student in London, obtaining an MA in History of Art in the late 1980s.

Gabrielle’s lifelong pursuit of knowledge and adventure took her across the world, from The Hague to Angola, Borneo, Brussels, Paris and London. She spoke five languages, and oversaw the Jungels-Winkler Charitable Foundation, which advances education through the visual arts, with a particular focus towards arts for the visually impaired.

Gabrielle was known as a passionate advocate and generous supporter of higher education, disability and fine arts. She contributed generously to her alma mater, Scripps College, and established the Gabrielle Jungels-Winkler Scholarship, which has enabled many graduates of the university to study for their master’s degree at The Courtauld. Over two decades, Gabrielle provided invaluable support to The Courtauld Scholarship Fund and The Courtauld Gallery programme. Her scholarship has supported more than a dozen Scripps College students to continue their studies in the MA History of Art programme at The Courtauld, and she has been a transformational donor to The Courtauld for more than three decades.

She inspired many through her philanthropy, and is survived by her children, Alexandra and Christophe. We extend our deepest sympathies to her family at this time, and shall miss her greatly.
