Courtauld alumna and Associate Lecturer Zehra Jumabhoy has co-curated the exhibition The Progressive Revolution: Modern Art for a New India in New York, which will be the first comprehensive exhibition dedicated to the work of the Progressive Artists’ Group in the United States in more than three decades. The exhibition spotlights seminal artworks by key members and associates of the Progressive Artists’ Group, including K.H. Ara, M.F. Husain, F.N. Souza, S.H. Raza, H.A. Gade and S.K. Bakre. The original group was formed in Bombay in 1947, within months of the declaration of India’s independence from British rule. Following the 70th anniversary of Indian Independence, the exhibition will examine the founding ideology of the Progressives, as well as explore the way that these artists from different social, cultural, and religious backgrounds found common cause at a time of political and social upheaval.
