Sun 25 Jul, 2021

Join us for the last Gallery Music before the Gallery closes, a summer celebration of music responding to our Impressionist collection, the work of Toulouse-Lautrec, and for fun, hear Handel meets Hendrix in Johanson’s Pluck, Strum and Hammer.

Anthony Burgess, Quartet no.1 Hommage á Maurice Ravel, mv.1 Trés Vif
Eric Satie Gymnopédie no.1 arr. Goss
Bryan Johanson Pluck, Strum and Hammer
Sreve Goss Carmen Fantasy on themes by G. Bizet

The Mēla guitar quartet brings together four guitarists of exceptional artistry and play with an “exalted level of perfection” (naxos.com).
Since being International Guitar Foundation young artists in 2016 they have gone on to release a CD of the guitar chamber works of Stephen Dodgson with NAXOS in 2017 and are Park Lane Group young artists for the 2018/19 season.

Known for their “benchmark performances” (Mark Houghton), the Mēla guitar quartet “make you forget you are listening to simply four guitars and carries you to a different sound world” (Therese Saba, Gendai guitar magazine), the music “shines, shimmers with sparkling clarity, what’s more, they play from memory and make pieces their own; wonderful music making!” (Phillip Houghton)
They have performed in venues such as St. James’ Church, Piccadilly; Kings Place, Hall one; Milton Court, Barbican; International Anthony Burgess Foundation, Manchester and Jimi Hendrix’s bedroom (!), at the HandelHendrix House.

Visit their website www.melagq.com to find out about their upcoming projects.
