In this double bill of two of the giants of the French quartet repertoire we explore shared inspiration and points of contact between Rodin and composers Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel. All three attended the Exposition Universelle in Paris in 1889, and all were blown away by the Indonesian gamelan musicians and dancers they saw there. For Rodin, the experience haunted his drawings of Cambodian dancers from 1906 (shown in the exhibition). For Debussy and Ravel, the experience stimulated the free use of non-Western harmonies and rhythms. This afternoon is made possible through a generous collaboration with the Park Lane Group.

Claude Debussy, String Quartet in G minor (1893)
Maurice Ravel, String Quartet in F major (1903)

Artesian String Quartet (Park Lane Group Young Artists):
Kate Suthers – violin
Cassi Hamilton – violin
Matthew Maguire – viola
António Novais – cello
