In Conversation: Alumna Charlotte Mullins and artist Susie Hamilton

Susie Hamilton, daughter of explorer Augustine Courtauld who in turn was a cousin of Samuel Courtauld, will launch her new book On Margate Sands: Paintings and Drawings based on T.S. Eliot’s The Waste Land.

ON MARGATE SANDS takes its inspiration from At the Violet Hour (part of Turner Contemporary’s ‘Journeys with The Waste Land’), an exhibition at The Nayland Rock Hotel, Margate. These paintings and drawings respond to the fragmented, messy and diverse nature of the poem and range from depictions of the sordid to the luminous, from the gloom of Hades or The City of London to the dazzling light of ‘the Hyacinth garden’. The book also includes examples of Hamilton’s earlier work since The Waste Land, her favourite poem and an influence for many years.

This evening, Courtauld Alumna Charlotte Mullins (BA 1994), who contributed a long essay to this new book, will be in conversation with Susie at the Paul Stolper Gallery.
