Alumni Event – In Conversation with Eva Rothschild

In Conversation with Eva Rothschild

On Wednesday 18 April the internationally-acclaimed sculptor Eva Rothschild will be in conversation with Caroline Douglas, Director of the Contemporary Art Society, to discuss her latest exhibition ‘Iceberg Hits’ at Modern Art on Vyner Street. Thanks to alumna Eleanor Crabtree (MA 2009) we have a select number of alumni spaces at the event.

‘Iceberg Hits’ is Eva Rothschild’s fifth solo exhibition with the gallery. Rothschild’s work has developed out of the legacy of the modernist sculptural tradition, in particular the formal languages of artists such as Barbara Hepworth and Eva Hesse – both of whom, in their own ways, were committed to studying sculpture’s capacity to create bodily encounters in space. Similarly for Rothschild, scale, mass, volume and materiality are central components of her sculptural lexicon, as are humour, illusion and ritual. Rothschild works with materials such as jesmonite, Perspex, steel, leather and beads.

Rothschild is recognised globally for her translations of these questions into both intimately-scaled work as well as large sculptural interventions, both for indoor and outdoor public space. Her exhibition at Modern Art emphasises the breadth of her practice, encompassing work of varying scales and production techniques that respond to the space of the gallery.
