Academic Promotions at The Courtauld

The Courtauld Institute of Art would like to congratulate the following colleagues who have received academic promotions:

  • Dr Jessica Barker has been promoted to Senior Lecturer. Jessica is a specialist in medieval art, with a particular emphasis on sculpture. Her research ranges across northern Europe and the Iberian peninsular, addressing questions of the macabre, gender, concealment and the body. Jessica’s monograph, Stone Fidelity: Marriage and Emotion in Medieval Tomb Sculpture explores the intersection of love and death in funerary art.
  • Martin Caiger-Smith has been promoted to Professor. Martin Caiger-Smith has been Head of the MA Curating the Art Museum programme since 2007. Martin has worked in a variety of positions in galleries, at the Photographers’ Gallery and at the Hayward Gallery in London, as Head of Exhibitions from 1996, and Acting Director, 2005/6, and acted as Programme Advisor for Two Temple Place from 2011-2020. His interests include modern and contemporary museums and galleries and curatorship, and the modern and recent history of curating, exhibitions and display. His major monograph on Antony Gormley was published in 2017, and he curated Antony Gormley’s exhibition at the Royal Academy in 2019.
  • Dr Caroline Levitt has been promoted to Senior Lecturer. Caroline is currently Head of the History of Art department. She is a specialist in 19th and 20th century French art and literature, and has a particular interest in relationships between text and image/object. Caroline’s main research is currently centred on books that have been drawn over by their artist-owners in an effort to annotate, illustrate, ornament, critique, obfuscate or even deface.
  • Clare Richardson has been promoted to Senior Lecturer. Clare is a paintings conservator whose research interests are focused on the materials and techniques of paintings in the Renaissance and Early Modern periods. Clare is currently engaged in research into historic lining methods at The Courtauld and Royal Museums Greenwich and the implications of the longevity of modern linings on collections care planning.
  • Dr Robin Schuldenfrei has been promoted to Reader. Robin’s research and teaching focuses on the history and theory of modern architecture. Her publications include the monograph book Luxury and Modernism: Architecture and the Object in Germany 1900-1933 (Princeton University Press), four edited and co-edited volumes, as well as numerous articles. She is currently finishing her next book titled, Objects in Exile: Modernism across Borders, 1930-1960, which has been supported by a major grant from the Henkel Foundation.
  • Dr Wenny Teo has been promoted to Senior Lecturer. Wenny is a specialist in modern and contemporary art, with a particular emphasis on China and Chinese diasporas in transnational and global contexts. Her writing has been published in numerous academic journals, exhibition catalogues and art magazines, and she serves on several editorial boards, including Oxford Art Journal, for which she is also Book Reviews Editor (post-1800s).
