This Study Event accompanies the Courtauld’s upcoming exhibition Salman Toor: Someone Like You which opened at Courtauld gallery on the 2nd October 2026.

Dr. Elena Crippa (Exhibition curator and Senior Curator of Contemporary Art at the Courtauld Gallery) and Dr. Saul Nelson (Research Fellow in the History of Art, Fitzwilliam College, University of Cambridge) will address several themes relating to Salman Toor’s paintings, exploring subjects of urban experience, migration, diasporic and queer identities and alienation, among others. The talks will take as a starting point Toor’s enduring engagement with art historical references, particularly Édouard Manet’s A Bar at the Folies-Bergère (1882), a painting the artist admires in the Courtauld Gallery collection and which he explicitly referenced in a work included in the exhibition: The Bar on East 13th (2019).
