Conservation Scientist

Nathan Daly is a Conservation Scientist in Department of Conservation. He provides MA student supervision, teaching and general support in the technical and scientific examination of paintings and historic objects across the programmes within the department. Nathan’s research interests include the use of various non-invasive imaging and spectroscopic techniques in the cultural heritage field, as well as multivariate statistical methods to better interrogate these datasets. He is particularly interested in the combination of complementary datasets in order to improve their interpretation and the application of this information by conservators, curators and art historians.
He holds a PhD in Chemistry from Columbia University (2017) and a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from Northwestern University (2011). Before joining the Courtauld in 2024, he was a Graduate Intern and Postdoctoral Fellow at the Getty Conservation Institute specialising in non-invasive analysis of works on paper (2016-2019), an EPSRC-funded Research Fellow at the National Gallery, London within Art through the ICT Lens (ARTICT): Big Data Processing Tools to Support the Technical Study, Preservation and Conservation of Old Master Paintings (2019-2022), and Research Scientist at the Fitzwilliam Museum with the Hamilton Kerr Institute (2022-2024).
