Professor Mark Hallett, Märit Rausing Director of The Courtauld, welcomes readers to the 47th issue of The Courtauld News.
As I reflect on another year of academic and curatorial success at The Courtauld, I feel confident in declaring that our institution continues to honour Samuel Courtauld’s (1876–1947) early vision – that art should not only enrich the individual but contribute to the benefit of society as a whole. Thanks to the continued dedication of our faculty, friends, patrons, donors and alumni, we are pushing The Courtauld forward as a global leader in academic innovation and public engagement. This collective commitment to the Courtauld’s founding principles is the very foundation of our community.
In this 47th issue of The Courtauld News, I am pleased to present a wide range of features that showcase both our scholarly programmes and our Gallery offerings. Notably, we highlight our expanding academic provision, including the new MA in Art and Business, introduced by course leaders Dr Tom Stammers and Courtauld alumna Stephanie Dieckvoss (MA 1995). This exciting addition, alongside the development of other new MA offerings and our new part-time Graduate Diploma in History of Art, reflects our commitment to expanding access and creating a broader, more flexible, range of MA and postgraduate programmes, designed to equip students for the evolving needs of the art world and cultural sectors.
Our alumni community, much like our talented faculty, remains a vital asset to The Courtauld’s success. Our graduates have continued to lead across a wide range of disciplines.
…As we look towards celebrating our 100th anniversary in 2032, we strive to fulfil our mission to become the world’s most ambitious, dynamic and innovative centre for the study and appreciation of the visual arts. Plans are underway to reunite our university campus with the Gallery at Somerset House, an exciting development that will enable us to expand our educational capacity significantly whilst also inviting new voices and perspectives into our community. This unified central residence will not only solidify our community but also enhance our ability to deliver world-leading research, teaching, and scholarship. It will firmly position The Courtauld at the heart of cultural and academic life, both within London and internationally across the globe.
As The Courtauld continues to flourish, I extend my deepest gratitude to you, our remarkable community, for your unwavering support. Our institution thrives thanks to the dedication and generosity of our students, alumni, visitors, members, patrons, donors and staff. Our success is founded on the strength of the individuals who form our community, and The Courtauld would
not be what it is today without you.
Thank you.
