Katie Campbell is a research fellow in the ‘King’s Silk Roads Programme’ at King’s College, University of Cambridge. Her doctoral research used archaeological excavation and legacy data to examine how cities changed in Central Asia, between 1200 and 1400 AD, especially the archaeological evidence for the Mongol conquest and its aftermath. She currently directs archaeological fieldwork at the abandoned city of Otrar/Otyrar in southern Kazakhstan, according to historical sources, the first city in the Khwarazmian Empire to be besieged by the Mongols and subsequently an important city in the Chagatai Khanate.
