The Tutu: Workshop inspired by masterpieces from the Oskar Reinhart and Courtauld Collections

Two girls dance on stage. They wear leotards; one girl bows to the other. i Edgar Germain Hilaire Degas, Two Dancers on a Stage, 1874, The Courtauld, London (Samuel Courtauld Trust)

The Courtauld is custodian to a number of artworks that capture the beauty of theatrical costumes — works in particular by Edgar Degas, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and Auguste Rodin. The Oskar Reinhart collection also contains striking representations of performers and their costumes.

To celebrate London Craft week and our temporary exhibition, The Griffin Catalyst Exhibition: Goya to Impressionism. Masterpieces from the Oskar Reinhart Collection, The Courtauld is hosting a special Tutu making demonstration and workshop.

Join us and learn from Anna Maria of Tutu Maker Studio about the history of the tutu, how it’s constructed and get a chance to practise some of the techniques involved yourself. The practical workshop will be inspired by the art historical research of the works on display.

The event includes access to The Griffin Catalyst Exhibition: Goya to Impressionism. Masterpieces from the Oskar Reinhart Collection and the main Courtauld collection.

Materials and equipment will be provided. Participants must be 12 years or above. Please note anyone under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

Schedule:

  • 10:00 – 12:00: Welcome and demonstration
  • 12:00 – 13:00: Tour of The Courtauld Gallery
  • 13:00 – 14:00: Lunch Break

About the maker:

Tutu Maker Studio offers bespoke tutu making in London. Created to ensure a perfect fit and beautiful original designs, their tutus are constructed with high quality Italian net for strength and durability. All their designs are developed with an eye to classic shapes and colours using sparkly laces and shimmering materials, crystals and trimmings to give a very elegant look under the stage lights. Their tutus are made to professional standards and individually handcrafted  to the customer specification, and  have been admired on stage with prestigious ballet companies like The Royal Ballet, Birmingham Royal Ballet, Scottish Ballet. Their unique and original designs have been worn by professional dancers and ballet students in international competitions like Prix De Lausanne, YAGP, Varna, Genee.

Anna Maria trained in costume at Nicolao Atelier, a theatrical costume house in the heart of Venice. This is where she also worked on international feature film productions that made her decide to move to London. Here in London she had the opportunity to be employed at the Royal Opera House where her passion for tutu making was developed and further refined by working closely with the Royal Ballet artists, soloists and principal dancers. Now you can benefit from her skilled expertise in costume creation to make the tutu of your dreams come true.
