This year, The Courtauld’s Learning team collaborated with over 300 young people (aged 14-18) from 40 UK state schools and colleges on our Reworking Manet project.
Using Édouard Manet’s A Bar at the Folies-Bergère (1882) as a starting point, students researched aspects of the painting and developed creative responses that explore it through a contemporary lens, demonstrating the continued relevance of Manet’s painting 140 years on from its creation. Their themes include consumerism, gender, leisure, wealth, social media influence, and historical influences on fashion.
Congratulations to all the young people that took part in the project! We are hugely impressed with the artworks they have created. We also extend our sincere thanks to the teachers, parents and guardians who have led, supported and inspired this project. Without their commitment in championing the role of art and art history in education, this exhibition, and our wider work, would not have been possible.
Have a look at their work via the online exhibition below, or visit the Reworking Manet exhibition in-person at The Courtauld Gallery until 18 Feb 2024.
