In the Summer term 2021 year 10 students from Malet Lambert School, Hull and year 12 students from Driffield School in East Yorkshire took part in our Impressions of Place project, alongside the Monet in Mind exhibition at Ferens Art Gallery, Hull.
Taking its lead from the Future Ferens young peoples’ group who were instrumental in the selection of works, curating and marketing for the Monet in Mind exhibition, this project asks students to create a work that connects to their own sense of place and space. Each group has worked collaboratively to identify a theme for their exhibition, and we think their individual and collective responses to the brief provide some brilliant and powerful insights into what a sense of place can mean.
"We are going to continue using this unit of work because I can see there is great importance for the students to be re-connected with their surroundings. We are seeing more and more children being absorbed by screens and becoming removed from reality or blurred by what reality is. I can see how the confidence levels, visual language and decision making has increased because of the workshops."Teacher, Malet Lambert School
