Wall Painting Conservation

One of the major centres in the world for education and research in wall painting conservation, the Courtauld offers a three-year MA course, as well as research degrees.

Research undertaken by students has covered an extraordinarily wide range of topics, much of it published and even more publishable.

Research degrees undertaken at the Masters level in the Department have included, for example, studies of the sculptural polychromy at Yungang (China), the technology of Hellenistic and Roman wall paintings in Cyprus, the deliquescence and crystallisation of soluble salts, and the structural stabilisation of Baroque ceiling paintings.

Current PhD research ranges from an art-historical study of late medieval wall painting in England to an investigation of the influence of environmental factors on the moisture sorption of porous materials.
