How can queer artists subvert the canon of art history?
This workshop will look at photographic portraits by artists such as Catherine Opie, Tammy Rae Carland and Mickalene Thomas, thinking through themes of gender and sexuality.
We will think about the history of portraiture, and uncover how these artists repurpose canonical works. Through close visual analysis we will explore the ways that these photographic portraits rethink traditional art historical representation, and in doing so, might provide visibility and representation from a feminist, queer and black perspective.
Our Art & Queer Theory: Photographic Portraits workshop will take place online on Thursday 16th February 2023. This session is written and delivered by Dr Tilly Scantlebury. Booking is essential due to popular demand.
Join us for one of our Insights Into Art History workshops taking place throughout the Spring term 2023. Each Insights Into Art History workshop will allow attendees to explore different themes, artworks and practises, developing their understanding of Art History.
