The panel discussion follows on the heels of Sonia Khurana’s solo show, Fold/Unfold, presented at the Chemould Prescott Road gallery, Mumbai, from the 20th of January to the 26th February 2017. The exhibition grew out of a series of conversations between Khurana and cultural theorist Griselda Pollock, attempting to place the body in oblique relation to feminist aesthetics of the counter-spectacle and performative resistance. Khurana says of her talk that it will focus on exploring, through her oeuvre, “the singular formulation of the melancholy of emplacement and displacement, dereliction and abjection, space and time, memory and the body: a body that sings and dances, walks and lies down…”
Based in New Delhi, Khurana is a path-breaking new media practitioner; working primarily with lens-based media – such as photography, video and film – her output is well known for its subtle dialogues with architectural spaces and outdoor environments. Khurana studied Fine Art at the Delhi College of Art, and then in London at the Royal College of Art, where she completed her Masters in 1999. In 2002, she did a two-year residency programme for practice-based research at the Rijksakademie VanBeeldende Kunsten, Amsterdam. Her artworks have been included in numerous international group shows, including elles@Centre Pompidou (2009/2010); Global Feminisms, Brooklyn Museum, New York, (2007), the Aichi Triennale (2010), the Busan Biennale (2004) and the Gwangju Biennale (2008).
Khurana’s presentation will be followed by a panel discussion, with Pollock and Wainwright, which focuses on her psycho-social artworks’ investigation of cultural and gendered identity; probing the relationship between the body, language and politics.
