As dance film gains increasing recognition within art historical discourse, how do we position it within the broader visual arts landscape? This event explores how dance film intersects with art history and how we can continue to platform such art form so it can continue to gain scholarly discussions.
Through screenings and discussions, this session spotlights pioneering projects that are expanding the field, with a particular focus on works created by Sadler’s Wells’ Digital Stage team and the acclaimed dance film ‘Into the Cauldron’. Members of both teams will be present to introduce their films and engage in discussion, offering insights into the creative and conceptual processes behind their work.
By bringing together scholars, artists, and filmmakers, this event aims to foster dialogue on how moving bodies on screen shape —and are shaped by — art historical narratives. How do dance films challenge traditional modes of exhibition ? In what ways does the cinematic framing of movement reshape our understanding of performance in the visual arts? Join us as we explore these questions and consider the future of dance film within art historical scholarship.
