Art and its Market

Speaker: Professor Dirk Boll

Dirk Boll, Professor of Arts Management at the University of Hamburg and Deputy Chairman of 20th & 21st Century Art EMEA at Christie’s, presents his latest publication, Art and Its Market, which is published by Hatje Cantz in 2024. This book launch signifies the commencement of a new series of ongoing talks, in conjunction with the new MA in Art and Business that was launched at the Courtauld in 2024.

Offering fresh insights into the history of art and its overlooked aspects, the extensive digitisation of structures and content, the evolving roles of museums and art criticism, and the new influences ranging from social media figures to NFTs, the art market has perhaps transformed more profoundly in the past decade than any other market system.

With 25 years of experience in the art industry, Dirk Boll serves as a constant chronicler and seasonal commentator on these significant developments. His handbook, Art and Its Market, is a dependable source of detailed knowledge concerning the inner workings of global art market systems. How do auctions, galleries, and fairs operate? How are prices established, and how do trends in both the production and collection of art arise? Furthermore, this edition offers extensive information on the practicalities of art acquisition: What are the customs and pitfalls, the economic interdependencies among artists, buyers, and other market participants, as well as the legal regulations that govern art trade?
