Dr George Bartlett is Associate Lecturer at the Courtauld and is a specialist in Late Antique, Medieval and Byzantine art. George has taught on Short Courses at the Courtauld since 2019, and in 2024-25 he will be teaching on the BA and MA programmes at the Courtauld.
George completed a CHASE-funded PhD on Christ’s naming inscriptions in Middle and Late Byzantine art at Sussex in 2020. His research examined the ways in which the different names and titles incribed alongside images of Christ contributed to wider Byzantine onomastic and Christological theologies, complicated modern understandings of image-text relations in Byzantine culture and were important devotional tools for Byzantine venerators of Christ’s image.
At Sussex, George taught across the BA and MA programmes on Late Antique and Byzantine art, Art History theory, research skills and methods, and the popular perception of Art History.
George is also an Associate Lecturer for the Diploma in Mosaic Studies at the London School of Mosaic, where he teaches the ‘History of Mosaic’ module.
George’s research interests include image-text relations and inscriptions in Byzantine culture, Christological imagery, medieval mosaics and glass production, and the perception of Byzantium in modern culture.
