Grant Lewis talks about his draw towards all things Renaissance, The Courtauld, and why Michelangelo still frightens him

Despite co-curating a show and writing a book about Michelangelo for the British Museum, PhD student Grant Lewis admits that the great artist still has an unusual effect on him. “I was always rather scared of Michelangelo,” he says. “There’s a profound intellectual depth to everything he does.” When assessing the Renaissance artist’s work and legacy, Lewis acknowledges, “Sometimes I don’t feel like I understand this person at all.”

Michelangelo‘s final years are the focus of the British Museum’s exciting exhibition, Michelangelo: The Last Decades. Collaborating with fellow Courtauld alum Sarah Vowles (MA 2008), he drew from various documents, including drawings, letters and poems, to chronicle the artist’s last years, particularly his friendships, loves, and faith.
