Course description

The crusades – the military occupation of the Holy Land by Western European Christians in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries – led to one of the great periods of cultural exchange in the Medieval period.

Here, Western crusaders encountered Orthodox Byzantine and Muslim cultures in a site deemed holy to all the major religions of the Mediterranean and Middle East. Examining everything from maps and buildings to icons, manuscripts, mosaics and metalwork we will explore the unique and fascinating art produced in this melting pot of different religions, ethnicities and cultures. Throughout the course we will probe the issues at play when studying the art of the crusades, including the concepts of colonialism, hybridity, attribution, and authorship.  During afternoon visits, we will have opportunity to see crusader art in the collection of the British Museum, and explore London’s own version of the Holy Sepulchre, the Temple Church.
