This afternoon’s music explores the parallels between artistic and musical composition through the medium of a solo oboe recital. The majority of the recital is programme music with a direct subject: the moon, a painting, or a myth. Yanada (the aboriginal word for moon) is evoked by Ross Edwards; Britten recounts the transformations chronicled in Ovid’s Metamorphoses; and the Silvestrini étude takes Renoir’s painting Sentir dans les bois as its inspiration. In contrast the Telemann can be considered absolute or abstract music where form and shapes and patterns require or involve no external reference.

Emily Penn, oboe
Emily Penn recently completed postgraduate studies at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, graduating with distinction. As a soloist Emily was awarded the Guildhall School Oboe Prize in 2016. Emily previously studies music at Durham University graduating with first class honours. An active chamber musician, Emily is a member of The Elvet Ensemble and also plays cor anglais with an oboe trio, most recently a lunchtime recital at the British Double Reed Society conference. Orchestral music is a passion and whilst at Guildhall Emily enjoyed the opportunity to play in side-by-side performances with the LSO and to perform regularly with the Guildhall Symphony and Opera orchestras including a collaboration with the Shanghai Opera House. Emily performs with the St Endellion Festival Orchestra and freelances around London and further afield. An upcoming highlight will be playing with the orchestra for the Opéra de Baugé Festival in France this summer.
