Some Roles of Drawing is an evening dedicated to architectural drawing. With guest speakers Tony Fretton, Dr Olivia Horsfall Turner, and Niall Hobhouse, it will explore some of the many and shifting roles played by architectural drawings.
Through three interconnected parts, Some Roles of Drawing begins with the physical object before moving to a discussion on how drawing fits into an architect’s process and the life (or lives) of drawing afterwards. Through this structure, the evening will also aim to examine how drawings are studied and the importance afforded to them within architectural history.
The talks will be followed by a drinks reception.

Tony Fretton is an architect. He is the principal of Tony Fretton Architects and holds teaching positions at the Delft University of Technology, the University of East London, and the Cass. His projects include the Lisson Gallery (UK, 1990), a house for Anish Kapoor (UK, 2008), Fuglsang Art Museum (Denmark, 2008) and Deinze Town Hall (Belgium, 2017).
Dr Olivia Horsfall Turner is an architectural historian, curator and writer. She is Senior Curator of Designs at the V&A, where she is responsible for the national collection of design drawings, which documents the creative process in art, architecture and design from the fourteenth century to the present day.
Niall Hobhouse collects drawings by architects. He curates exhibitions, and writes about buildings, landscape and museums. He established Drawing Matter Trust to explore the role of drawing within architecture, architectural memory and exhibitions.
