19 Nov 2021 – 9 Jan 2022

The opening display in the new temporary exhibition galleries will showcase the gift of 24 important modern and post-war drawings presented by artist Linda Karshan in memory of her husband, Howard Karshan.

This outstanding group of drawings features work by European and American masters including Georg Baselitz, Joseph Beuys, Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, Gerhard Richter, Louis Soutter and Cy Twombly.

One of the most significant gifts of art to The Courtauld in a generation, the Karshan gift will transform the collection by extending its major historical holdings fully into the twentieth century. Aside from Cézanne, none of the artists included in the gift has previously been represented in the collection.

This display is included in the admission ticket to The Courtauld Gallery.

The exhibition is accompanied by a new catalogue, which is available online and also in The Courtauld Shop. It is also supported by a series of events, including curatorial talks on 28 November, and 1, 8, 12 and 15 December, and 5 January; ‘Considering Collecting: Collections within Collections’ on 14 December; and a young people’s workshop on 11 December.
