Thesis: France picturesque: viewing landscapes in Parisian interiors, 1680-1750

My research traces the development of landscape as a pictorial genre in Paris between 1680 and 1750. Even if the Académie Royale had, among its members, several painters who specialized in landscape, artists such as Jean-Baptiste Forest, Antoine Watteau and Jean-Baptiste Oudry engaged deeply with landscape painting in their practice. They responded to the current need for naturalism by introducing new sources for the study of spatial composition, and new practices to observe the natural world. Though the careful selection of five case studies, my thesis shows that several history painters established parallel careers as landscape painters thanks to the dynamic art market and the patronage of the Parisian urban elite.
