One of the finest collections of Impressionism anywhere in the world was assembled by the English industrialist and philanthropist Samuel Courtauld (1876-1947) in the 1920s. A decade later, he gave the majority of these remarkable works to establish The Courtauld Institute of Art, fulfilling his desire to give the public access to the history of art. Beyond The Collection

Samuel Courtauld’s life ran from the Victorian era, though two World Wars and into the modern age of consumerism, liberal democracy and social welfare. He navigated these profound ruptures and changes by holding fast to a set of immutable principles.
