Artists Michael Craig-Martin and Runa Islam will discuss their works in relation to the exhibition There Not There at The Courtauld Gallery. Considering these artists’ wide-ranging artistic practices, the discussion will be an opportunity to investigate their work and draw out similarities through the themes of absence, transformation and illusion. This event will expand upon There Not There and offer a fascinating insight into how art can capture the essence of disappearance and change.
Sir Michael Craig-Martin CBE RA is an Irish-British artist whose practice encompasses painting, drawing and conceptual art. He is best known for his depictions of everyday objects in vivid colours with strong outlines. In There Not There, Craig-Martin’s Kid’s Stuff 1-7 encourages reflection upon personal experience and transformation over a lifetime.
Runa Islam was born in Dhaka, Bangladesh and moved to London at an early age. She uses the medium of film to examine the nature of representation and perception. Islam’s video work Stare Out (Blink) investigates disappearance and illusion, prompting questions about traces and memory after something has vanished.
