Friends visit of Coventry: Guided visit of the Herbert Art Gallery and Museum, talk by Dr Barnaby Wright and tour of Coventry Cathedral

Tue 16 Nov, 2021

This is a day trip to Coventry to visit the Herbert Art Gallery and Museum, attend a talk on Cézanne’s Mountain by Dr Barnaby Wright, Deputy Head of The Courtauld Gallery and Curator of 20 C. Art, and visit Coventry Cathedral.

Join us for a guided tour of the Herbert’s collection of old masters and 20th century paintings, including works by Lowry, Paul Nash, Stanley Spencer, David Bomberg. Highlight will be Paul Cézanne’s painting Montagne Sainte-Victoire on loan from The Courtauld Gallery and Dr Wright’s talk on Cézanne’s Mountain at lunchtime.

There may be a little spare time to visit ‘Journeys with ‘The Waste Land’’, a visual response for Coventry to TS Eliot’s poem. This includes works by Peter Blake, Jacob Epstein, Elisabeth Frink, RB Kitaj, Percy Wyndham Lewis, Paul Nash, George Shaw, John Stezaker, Graham Sutherland and JMW Turner. There are also Artists’ Rooms: Anselm Kiefer from Tate.

After lunch we will walk five minutes to Coventry Cathedral, famously bombed in the war and replaced by a new one, built between 1951 and 1962 after a design by Basil Spence and partners, architects. There we will  enjoy another guided tour.
