Research Groups and Projects
The Gothic Ivories Project was launched in October 2008 at the Courtauld Institute of Art. It consists of an online database of ivory sculptures made in Western Europe ca. 1200-ca. 1530, as well as neo-Gothic pieces.
The Corpus is the first searchable, digital archive of its kind. It is an authoritative and comprehensive resource. Significant quantities of previously unrecorded material have come to light in the course of the project, and there are many examples of sculpture that are being recorded, catalogued and photographed in an academic context for the first time.
The CVMA is an international research project dedicated to the publication of medieval stained glass. It was founded in 1949 and has committees in fourteen countries. Over sixty-five volumes have been published so far. In Britain, the CVMA is a British Academy Research Project, funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Board and hosted by the Courtauld Institute of Art in the University of London. A project committee oversees the programme of publications, which are undertaken by volunteer authors.
RCIMS brings together scholars, curators, and researchers involved with illuminated manuscripts: its purpose is to provide a focus and resource by providing information, by keeping lines of communication open, by establishing links, formal or informal as appropriate, and by organising events in London.
Giotto’s Circle provides a focus for small, informal seminars and site visits for those engaged in research on the art of thirteenth- and fourteenth-century Italy. It is also intended to host larger events at The Courtauld Institute from time to time.
This lecture series, established in 1999, is sponsored by the International Center of Medieval Art, New York. ICMA promotes the study of the visual arts of the Middle Ages. Its worldwide membership includes academics, museum professionals, students, and other enthusiasts. ICMA publishes a scholarly journal Gesta, a newsletter, sponsors lectures and conference sessions.
